The Facebook Fiasco!

September 23, 2011 Leave a comment

It’s been two days since the “powers that be” at Facebook decided to mess with our heads again and shuffle around how they display posts and feeds.

     People were crying foul!

How dare you mess with our way of life.

As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror!

Not to mention anger, frustration & sheer annoyance!

Well, according to sources, this is just the beginning!

Your precise Facebook is no more!

     Well, not like it was.

Facebook wants to make it better!

Seriously? Screwing with people’s minds and making them cringe everytime they sign on to your service is making things better?

Or as John McClane says, “Just a fly in the ointment, Hans. The monkey in the wrench. The pain in the ass.”

My 19 year old daughter was so annoyed at the rapid changes Facebook was making she was contemplating deleting her account and just using her Google + account. Which incidently, she says was more like Facebook a few years ago, but with easier to use, cool features.

“No need to fear…Underdog is here!”

Sorry, just always wanted to find a place to use that phrase and there it was!

Well, for now I have a quick fix that will help solve some issues.

If you want your Facebook feed to go back to normal…here’s what you do.

First, go to your account settings (which is in the top right corner, with the little arrow pointing down, the arrow next to home…click it) and go to notifications. At the top right is a box that says email frequency. Uncheck that box and your feed will show all the posts again.

Then go to your home page and anything in the “Top Stories” click on the down arrow in the upper right and “unmark as top story” – now your newsfeed will be setup by timestamp rather than randomly picking “top stories.

It’s a start and will help bring some semblance of normalcy back…at least for a few weeks until Facebook rolls out more nerve whacking stuff. And, believe me, what that have planned will make Wednesday’s fiasco a walk in the park.

Rapid changes to your service can and will upset people and is the fastest way to lose customers. Facebook may have the ability to offset those defections of people who go elsewhere, but the average entrepreneur doesn’t. So, if you plan on making changes, do so in a manner that won’t upset the majority of your customers.

  Until Next Time,

     “Live with Passion!”

   Rob Anspach

P.S.  As changes occur on Facebook or other social sites, I will try to have up to date, easy to understand instructions or fast fixes that will have you back up and posting again.

Google’s “New Coke” Blunder!

Seems like even Mega, Goliath type companies don’t learn from the mistakes made by others, oh so many years ago.

Google with their latest algorithm launched just a few weeks ago to help them compete better in the world of internet search inquiries is taking a lesson out of Coca Cola’s play book.

Twenty six years ago Coke in order to compete with Pepsi changed the formula of their flagship drink and made it “New Coke”. In their drastic attempt to be like their competitor Coke failed to realize who their customers were. They wanted to capture Pepsi’s new generation but failed to recognize the generation that help shaped them into a global powerhouse.

Coke failed miserably!

In time Coke learned from their mistakes and reshaped their company, refocused their efforts, listened to their customers and now are the number one beverage company in the world.

Google was once the mighty and proud search engine that everyone used, and every one wanted to be ranked on.

They’re screwing up!

Google’s latest attempt at recoding the algorithm that made them famous is putting entrepreneurs, web companies and those searching in frantic mode.

Google is the “New Coke” all over again.

Websites that have enjoyed prime real estate on Page 1 of Google for their key words are being tossed aside like yesterday’s trash.

Strategies employed by the so-called SEO experts are being put to the test and major money is being spent to force everyone to drink Google’s new concoction.

Google is running scared!

Their biggest competitor is Facebook!

While Facebook is relatively the newcomer compared to Google – it really is the Coke vs Pepsi war all over again.

In this battle, everyone with a website is collateral damage.

Google is punishing those without regard to how long they’ve been on the net or how much money they make or spend. And, yet at the same time rewarding those who have no clue what they are doing, or how ridiculous their content is.

It’s so haphazard!

And Google seems to be proud of it!

In my search for answers I’ve discovered a few clues to Google’s “New Coke” formula, and it goes something like this…

The Main Ingredients to Google’s Algorithm.

(importance from top to bottom)

1)SEO Keyword Usage Factors

2)Domain Strength / Speed

3)Registration History

4)Age & Quality of Links

5)Historical CTR to page in SERP’s

6)Content Quality Score

7)Negative Results

Keywords are still a very important factor in determining where your website page ranks on Google’s search. Add in how fast your website loads and how old it is and you have the making for a great “Page 1″ search.

Here’s the monkey in your wrench!

It’s the sweetness that Google hopes will help shape their future.

They’ve added a few more tricks! No copying! Yep, Google now grades on content, the time users spend on your site, usability, links to and from, and how your page is being promoted on social media, article submission sites and blogs.

What Google is hoping to do is force all website owners to be more creative, original and somewhat authoritative in their content creation. Google penalizes your site for using content that is duplicated from others or even your own sites.

Google no longer wants the generation that helped build them, they want the new generation that sits in front of the computer all day doing nothing but creating original works of art, sipping from their fountain.

It’s sounds great in theory, as I’m sure so did the idea of “New Coke”!

But, in all reality there is not enough credible in-the-know web designers, SEO experts or do-it-yourselfers to implement all the new rules for websites to achieve what Google is proposing.

Hey, just knowing what I shared with you could help you achieve higher rankings. Well, until Google decides to change the formula again.

Until Next Time,

   “Live with Passion!”

Are you listed?

I’m sure you’ve heard me or others talk about search engine optimization and making sure you’re using the right keywords to ensure placement on top of list, page one of Google, right?

Well, Google isn’t the only player in town.

And, to be honest, I’ve seen some real horrible sites getting top listed, just because they knew the secret.

What if you could increase your internet visibility almost overnight?

Would you? Of course you would!

What if I told you it was free and it would only require about an hour of your time to do it…again, would you?

Yes!

If I were to type your business name into Google or Bing what would I find?

Are you listed?

Maybe!

What about Yelp, Yahoo or perhaps Best of the Web and Hot Frog?

Maybe not!

If you aren’t listed, your local community won’t be able to find you!

Would you like see first hand how your business is being listed on the major search engines?

Click here if your answer is YES!

It just takes a few seconds to find out!

Are you listed? If not, schedule some time this week and make sure you get listed! It’s the only way people will find you!

Get fast Answers with Facebook Questions!

March 29, 2011 Leave a comment
In the past if you wanted to know something you would look it up on Google, right?

But what if you wanted to know more detailed information, how would normally go about it. You would research it. Maybe go to the library and drudge through stacks of dusty books or hire a service to perform a poll.

That’s all well and good, but that takes up too much time.

Research just easier and faster.

Now, you can ask your Facebook followers pertinent questions and get responses almost immediately.

So, if you wanted to know what the most popular color was. You could ask “What is your favorite color?” and put several colors as options… like Blue, Red, Green or White.

The people that respond to your question would most likely pick from your options.

Now, I’m not saying you should ask people what their favorite color is, but you should ask questions.

Sure, if you really want to know if people think you’re sexy, I suppose you could ask that question. Followed by Yes, No, Maybe or Who?

But, why?

Ask questions that will have a long lasting impact on your business.

One’s that will help you improve your service, product, website or even the content of your fan page.

It’s called Facebook Questions and it’s now available on everyone’s Facebook account.

Immediate answers right at your finger tips!

Two Rights Make An Airplane!

October 28, 2010 Leave a comment

High school and college give you classes that mold you into a well rounded student…blah, bla-blah! How boring I thought as I sat though another high school parent-teacher assembly. Pure rubbish!

“The truth is that most people are intellectually lazy, surprisingly un-curious in their acquisition of information”.

That quote appears on page 70 of the “Ultimate Entrepreneurs Success Secrets” book!

A book that was given to me by one of the co-authors, Steve Sipress. He along with a group of Chicago’s finest penned some of the most inspiring words that entrepreneurs should follow in their quest to better themselves.

And, yet only those that wish to increase their success will ever read it.

Yep, we as a society tend to be intellectually lazy. We would rather wait for the movie then read the book.

The entrepreneurs I associate with seldom wait for those that are lazy to catch up. I suppose the main reason is that we hate constantly explaining to those who really have no desire to learn secrets they will never utilize.

Yesterday my 13 year old son was having an argument with my 21 year old daughter. My daughter didn’t approve of her brothers choices about a project he was working on. My daughter in trying to prove her point says, “two wrongs don’t make a right!”

My son without hesitation replies, “yes, but two rights make an airplane!”

My daughter didn’t get it! And all she could muster was… “you’re stupid!”

I started laughing…I knew exactly what my son meant. My wife looked at me like I was off my rocker, she didn’t get it either.

You see it’s not “right” but rather “Wright”…as in Wilbur and Orville!

Had these two individuals not learned from the wrongs or weren’t curious enough we would never have the airplane.

Learn to devour information! Be curious! Ask questions!

Especially information related to your field.

I read everything! I’m curious!

I take information and see how I can use it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t!

Those who possess information, will ultimately be the winners.

Imagine, being prepped throughout your school days to act, think and learn just like everyone else. Well rounded…doesn’t cut it!

If you want to succeed, you have to stop doing what everyone else is doing and do what nobody is doing. Be different! Don’t be average…be an expert.

Yep, the experts don’t become masters of their fields by simply learning a few tricks, nope they become masters by learning everything they can, being curious, asking questions, re-discovering and implementing.

Stop trying to be all things to all people. Like I said, well rounded doesn’t cut it! Be the expert in one field and learn to dominate it.

I’ll leave you with this…Google makes billions by controlling how information is presented. Yet, the majority of people looking for information on Google never quite find what they are looking for. Because they are lazy they settle for what is there! Learn to assemble the knowledge you gain in such a way that people will beat a path to your door to get it.

Never let anyone accuse you of being lazy, especially towards acquisition of information!

Until Next Time,

“Live With Passion!”

Rob Anspach

P.S. Before Tony Robbins became famous, he was basically a janitor. Yet, he had a curiousity about learning, plus a burning desire to succeed. He knew he could conquer the world, he just needed the right information to arm himself with. He devoured everything he could about NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), affirmations, and goals. Within a very short time he became the go-to expert on personal coaching.

Poof! They Were Gone!

October 21, 2010 Leave a comment

I just lost 700!

I was really bummed too!

I have no clue what happened, or where it all went!

Oh, right! You have no clue what I’m rambling about do you?

I didn’t lose 700 dollars! I lost 700 backlinks!

Virtually overnight!

Never saw it coming…they just vanished! Poof!

It sort of feels like someone came into my house, nosed around and stole only half the soup spoons out of the cutlery draw. Yeah it’s an inconvenience, but I’ll live!

Oh, it’s nothing new! They seem to pull this quite a lot.

I suppose when you own the game, you can make the rules.

Well, some of the new analytics programs are designed to weed out old or broken backlinks or even discount mass generated or irrelevant links.

To some degree, the new analytics are good, they give you a more up to date, solid point of reference. Yet, for some, losing 700 backlinks overnight means losing money.

I recently got to talking with my lawyer buddy and he believes the whole “pay for backlinks” thing is borderline unethical. To be honest, it can be! There are unscrupulous ways to trick the system and build massive amounts of backlinks to increase your pagerank. Unfortunately, most major search engines are designed to look for anomalies and filter them out.

So I did some checking and the backlinks I’m down to…are relatively safe. They are ones that are crosslinked to my social media sites, article submission sites, my blog, YouTube, and some other places I frequently visit.

Here’s what I did find out…all the ones that were dismissed…were because I didn’t play the game their way. About nine months ago, I used a service to ping sites so I could build up my backlinks and increase my pagerank. It sounded good. Frankly, I didn’t pay much for the service. Less than the cost of a Starbucks coffee.

This was before I knew all the right moves when it comes to building pagerank and using relevant backlinks.

Lesson learned, huh!

Yeah I lost 700 backlinks…but, it had no impact on my pageranking or any loss of keyword searchable inquiries…at least what I can tell.

If you are to use a service to build pagerank, make sure the backlinks are to relevant sites that complement your services. Otherwise, the “powers that be” may deem your new backlinks null and void.

So, yes, be ethical in what you do…build your pageranks the right way and you won’t need to worry if you just lost backlinks.

Until next time,

“Live With Passion”

Rob Anspach

P.S. When the search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) create a new analytics program…it sometimes plays havoc on pagerank and backlink statuses. If you play the game by their terms, you will always come out a winner.

Where do I sign up?

August 30, 2010 Leave a comment

I just returned from a great vacation at the beach.

The cool thing was, it looked like I was was in front of my computer posting to social media the whole time. Nobody knew I was away.

Yeah, I know… it was wrong of me to trick you in such a dastardly way. But hey, even us marketing maniacs need a break now and then. So, I apologize if I tricked you. Although, it was so much fun…muwhahaha!

If you must I know I was in Dewey Beach enjoying the fun, sun, surf, sand and way too much food. I think next year I might have to take the whole summer off.

Well, I wasn’t without my iPhone!

I stilled checked voicemails, emails and occassionally poked my eyes into Facebook and Linkedin a few times to see what was happening.

One gentleman called me and couldn’t believe I wasn’t actually posting “live”, that everything that was appearing on my social media sites had been preprogrammed to go out at specific times.

I carefully explained to him that although I would love to be in front of my computer or tied to checking every post via my cell, it just wasn’t feasible and that it would hamper my ability to help my clients. And, that by having my posts staggered throughout the day I could live my life and focus on helping my clients make money.

“Where do I sign up?”…was his reply!

He had suffered frustrations from trying to post to every social platform out there, he was tired and needed a break. He just wanted to focus on what he knew best…and social media wasn’t it.

He realized that I could probably teach him how to do it, but that it would require time and he really didn’t want to come up with material for content, nor be distracted with trying to learn something new.

So as I write this, I’m also researching, writing and jotting down information to turn into brilliant, money-making, attention-grabbing posts for him!

How ’bout you?

Do you want to put your social media experience into overdrive? Are your frustrated with content creation? Maybe, you’re annoyed that you’re spending too much time glued to the computer and not enough time focusing on making money! Or, maybe, you just need a break away from knowing what’s going on with everyone on your social sites.

Yep, I can help ya!

Social media is rapidly changing the landscape of the internet are you prepared?

Facebook has surpassed Google in traffic. Yep, social media has trumped the world’s greatest search engine. Over 500 million users are actively engaged on Facebook!

Are you ready?

I am!

If you want to improve your social media experience, without all the headaches, without the frustrations, without all the annoyances or without all the sweat equity lost coming up with content and hours of posting every day… then you owe it to yourself to change.

If its frustrating, annoying, or a waste of time why do you do it?

SEO Secrets Revealed!

Once a month I travel to West Chester Pa to attend a high impact kick butt marketing meeting. This my friend is not your typical rah-rah meeting…no way, no how!

Each 2 hour meeting is filled with more “in your face” real world, proven marketing tips, secrets, and advice than most people get in a year or maybe even in a lifetime.

And, I’m going to share with you some of what was revealed to me in this private members only closed door session. (I hope the other members don’t find out I’m sharing this or I might get in deep trouble…so shhh! don’t tell anyone I’m doing this okay!)

The secrets I’m about to share with you are critical to getting you to the top of Google page ranks and being number #1 with your keywords. So if page rank, Google or keywords bore you to tears…well, maybe you need to stop reading this right now!

Good, you’re still with me! That means that you are a true marketer and understand the power SEO, Google, keywords and page rank mean to your website and your wallet.

When using keywords for your site use those words or phrases that attract at least 10 thousand searches a month. You want to avoid generic terms, words or descriptors that link to more than 100 thousand competing pages. What this means is that if you want to compete with big name companies (such as McDonalds, Nike, Walt Disney) it’s very hard to use their descriptors as your keywords… they have dominant page rank keywords and a team of SEO experts who are trained to keep their brand in top spots.

A keyword search for “marketing” is too generic and would generate 510,000,000 results. I don’t know about you…but I really don’t have that much time to devote to seach 510 million pages. Use keyword phrases instead…it narrows the fields and creates an easier to search ranking.

If we use the term… “marketing, media and money” in our google search… my wordpress blog ( www.robanspach.wordpress.com ) came up #1 on Google. Yay me!

Or how about the term “stand out marketing” and you’ll see my buddy Charlie McDermott’s company Stand Out Video and Marketing ranks #1 on Google.

If you ever wanted to add a spark of flair to your site and give it that just wrote on look you might type “copy doodles” in a search… and you would come across my buddy Mike Capuzzi’s website listing on Google for copwriting cosmetics in the #1 spot.

Here are 3 easy to use websites that will help you uncover search words, phrases and terms that you can use as keywords on your site and help you with your page ranking.

www.googlekeywordtool.com -keyword tool, analytics, gadgets and more
www.google.com/sktool – search based keyword tool
www.seoquake.com – only available for Firefox and Chrome

Here are a five simple tips you can use that will help your Google rank!
1. Each page of your website should be optimized with it’s own keywords and phrases.
2. Each page should act as a stand alone site.
3. Every page of your website should have an opt-in form to gather visitors email addresses.
4. Your title tag (the words at the top of the screen that describe your site, that show up on the browser banner) should be no more than 9 words long. Should be relevant to your content.
5. Backlinks are important… but not all are created equal. Your backlinks (links coming from other sites) need to be relevant to your content or Google will not rank your page high on the charts. If you offer gardening tips on your website, but all of your backlinks are from sports related sites…sorry, you just won’t get the ranking from Google that you desire.

There ya go…a few helpful search engine optimization tips that when implemented will have you soaring up the google page rank charts.

Until next time,

“Live with passion”

Rob Anspach

www.robanspach.com

P.S. Not all web designers are created equal…and sadly some don’t really understand SEO, page rank or optimization. Sometimes it’s better to hire 2 separate companies – one to design an eye-catching site and the other to optimize your site for page rank.

Making a BIG splash!

In my last post I talked about splashing your customer, to get noticed.
Well, what I’m going to share with you today will have your customers doing it for you!

I need to warn you, once you start doing this you may never want to stop.

The cool thing about this, is your customers (or clients as I like to call them) get involved and help splash others to help you get noticed.

It’s simple to implement…

No skill required!

And, like I said, once you get started…

What the heck is it you ask?

It’s called testimonials.

Getting your clients to give you their thoughts about your service.

For years I have been telling clients to get testimonials. It’s a simple and powerful way to grow your business using someone else’s viewpoint.

But here’s is where it gets interesting!

If you really want to make a big splash, you have to go full force into the water!

Simple worded testimonials are good.

Yet this method goes a step further and will kick your testimonials up a notch.

It’s called video!

Yep, take your Flip camera, iPhone camera or Kodak Zi8 and video your clients testimonial. This is so powerful at helping build your business…and so simple at the same time.

A video testimonial doesn’t have to be long (a few seconds to a few minutes). Yet, it captures your clients essence (the way they stand, how they talk, how they sound, their mannerisms and their sincerity) much better than a written testimonial.

The cool thing is, video gets picked up and ranked better on Google than a written testimonial does. Which means if you add the video testimonial to your website, not only will it help push your website on a higher rank with Google… it will help drive more traffic to your door.

So go ahead start getting video testimonials from your clients and let them help you splash others.

Until next time,

“Live with passion”

Rob Anspach

www.robanspach.com

P.S. My suggestion is you load the video testimonial onto YouTube first, then place the converted YouTube file onto your site. This way the video loads faster off your site and doesn’t take up valuable space on your server.

It’s so simple…why aren’t you doing it?

April 22, 2010 Leave a comment

I’ve written about this before, and have talked until I was blue in the face…
and yet there are those who think this is so complicated.

It’s not!

In fact, it’s one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways of promoting your business and I’m literally tearing my hair out getting people to try it.

My goodness people!

Yeah, okay it’s that old expression you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink, right?

First off you’re not a horse…but if you were I bet I could get you to do this.

What I’m talking about is so simple…even the Geico cavemen have mastered it.

It’s Facebook!

I know you know it…but…

Why aren’t you there?

Or should I say, why don’t you have a fan page promoting your business?

This isn’t rocket science. No degree required!

Facebook is so popular that it rivals Google in page views and traffic.

It’s so simple to set-up and promote.

But, hey maybe you don’t have the time…or you think it’s a major waste of time.

Then by all means have someone else set it up and monitor it for you!

“Build it and they will come!”
The quote made famous by Ray Kinsella (er, I mean Kevin Costner) in the movie Field of Dreams. It may not have much thought anymore in the real world…but in social media, if you build it…people will take notice. They will come to facebook for reasons they can’t even fathom.

Okay that last part may not be 100% accurate.

Most people join Facebook to keep in touch with long lost friends, relatives and coworkers…but once there discover they can easily communicate with their carpenter, plumber, favorite gelati store, carpet cleaner, scout troop or marketing consultant.

This is where having a fan page comes in handy. You can easily communicate your marketing message to the masses faster, easier and certainly cheaper than newsprint or radio.

Once you have your fan page set up (literally in minutes) you can start promoting your business. Yeah, it’s that simple…and it’s FREE!

Nothing beats FREE! Right? Well, Facebook is a huge way to generate FREE marketing for your business, group, organization or whatever you wish to promote.

Then once you have about 100 fans (people who want to follow you on facebook) then you can add a vanity name. (See the P.S. below for info on vanity names)

So what’s keeping you from capitalizing on the Facebook phenomenon?

Get your Facebook fan page up today and start promoting and you’ll kick yourself wondering why it took you so long to do so.

Until next time,

“Live with passion”

Rob Anspach

www.robanspach.com

P.S. If you want to learn about facebook vanity names, see my article at http://www.bit.ly/bxr8QG

P.P.S. A great book I would highly recommend (if you want to take advantage of everything Facebook has to offer) is “Facebook for Dummies!”
